I love making wreaths! They seem to be one of the easiest ways to add some festiveness to your home. Wreaths can be big or small, and totally ornate, or very simple. Most of mine have to be a little bit on the smaller side to fit my door. I have a shelf right below my windows, which really doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s there, so I have to work around it.
For Easter this year, I finally made a wreath that I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time. It was very simple to make, and looks great on our front door. I got all of my supplies from my local Walmart store, and this wreath cost me less than $15! Check it out and let me know what you think!
What you need:
- Grapevine wreath
- Artificial Easter Flowers. I used Easter Lilies and Yellow Mums.
- Scrap Wood. I used Mahogany left over from our Dining Table build.
- Ribbon, or Tulle
- Leather cord
- Wire Cutters
- Glue Gun and Glue sticks
How you make it:
1. Choose your scrap wood, and cut it down to size for your cross. I made two lengths of wood. One was 18″x1″ and the other was 12″x1″. Clean it up and sand it smooth. Use wood glue and clamps, or we used clothespins, to secure the pieces together, and let it dry while making the wreath.
2. Start by cutting all of the flowers off of the “branch” with your wire cutters. Count up how many you have and divide them up evenly.
3. Arrange flowers on grapevine wreath by sticking the stems through the wreath and securing them on the back side by twisting the ones that are close together, and using the glue gun to secure all of them down. I split the flowers up and arranged them evenly on either side of where I wanted my bow to go.
4. Use your ribbon, or tulle to make a bow, and fill in the empty space. I wrapped the visible wreath with it on either side of the bow. Secure on with glue gun!
5. Once your glue is dry, sand off any excess glue that may have come out. Use coconut oil, or any other type of varnish, or clear polyurethane to seal and protect the wood. We used coconut oil because we were working indoors, and it’s a good wood moisturizer. It brought a nice color out of our mahogany, and made it look nice!
6. Take your leather cord, and wrap it around the center of the cross to give it just a hint of decoration. Tie it on the back and secure it with the glue gun.
7. Position your cross where you want it on your wreath and secure the cross to the wreath. I tucked the bottom of it into the tulle and secured both the top and bottom to the wreath using my hot glue gun.
8. Create a hanging loop from the leather cord. Secure it to the top of the wreath to hang on your door.
9. Hang your Easter wreath! This is what the finished product looks like on my front door. You can add extra to it if you’d like to hang some purple fabric on the cross before Easter, and change it to white or bright yellow on Easter. You can even add extra flowers, etc to the cross. This was just one idea!
Here’s another wreath I made for a friend of mine. Same concept, just different color scheme:
Are you making a wreath, or any other decorations for Easter this year? I’d love to see them if you are!
