The weather has changed very quickly here in Eastern NC. We went from Winter just hanging on, to almost Summer in a matter of weeks! That quick turn in temps means that it’s time to hurry up and get anything that we want to plant, in the ground, and quickly!
Of course, there’s the normal flowerbeds, and vegetable garden that we have here in our yards. We have to get those ready fast. This year, my hubby wanted to try something new, that goes along with his latest hobby. He wanted to try and grow hops for his home brewing! He was able to get some hop rhizomes from a friend and I just had to grab a couple of supplies for him!
I headed over to my local Walmart store, since I knew they would have everything we needed in their Seasonal and Garden section. I picked up a new garden hose and spray nozzle first, since ours broke this Winter with all the freezes we had. I picked up a couple of bags of gardening soil, and of course, some good gardening gloves for him to use.
As soon as I got home, he picked up the Black & Decker shovel that we were sent last year to help us get our vegetable gardens going! He started by digging a small trench in the sandy part of the yard. I guess he was doing his research while I was at the store. Apparently hop rhizomes like to be in a bit of sandy soil.
As soon as he got a large enough trench dug out, he filled it up with the garden soil that I had bought, and started planting.
Once he got everything in the ground, he watered the soil just enough to get it wet, but not too wet.
That’s really it… We haven’t started on our vegetable garden yet because we’ve been so busy, but that is coming up soon.. Hopefully before it’s too late. I knew we have a good jump on supplies, now it’s just a matter of cleaning out the weeds and getting it started.
Hubby says he really liked the gloves I picked for him. He’s used them for a few yard projects, and he says they were comfortable, and the rubber coating on the palms/inside of fingers really helped him with gripping and keeping things from hurting his hands, like thorns. They were a great choice and not very expensive at all!
He is really hoping these plants grow. He’s very interested in using more locally grown things for his homebrew, and really, something that grew in his own back yard would be so cool!
What are your gardening plans this year? Have you started a garden yet? What did you plant?
