Back to School DIY School Supply Cake for Teacher!

It’s that time again! The kids are having mixed feelings about going back to school. On one hand, they can’t wait to see all of their friends again, but on the other hand, they really don’t want to sit in a classroom and do homework again. Me, well, I’m mixed too. I love having the girls at home, and we’ve had a great Summer, but I also can’t wait to see what new things they learn this year.

One of the craziest things about Back to School season, is school supply shopping, and in our area, it’s serious! The sales, the crowds, the aisles and aisles of school supplies. One trip to the store can make you tired! Our area, like many others, also has children who can’t afford to buy all of their school supplies, and after years of volunteering in the school, I’ve seen teachers  struggle to make sure their students have everything they need. This year, we have a brand new teacher.. Not just new to us, but new to teaching as well. She is very excited to be teaching our kids, as are we to have her as our teacher.

I’ve never done a back to school gift for our teacher, but figured this was a cute idea to start, and with her being a new teacher, I thought it would be a neat way to welcome her to our school!

Check out the School Supply “Cake” I put together for her! It’s really easy to do, and if you catch it at the right time, you can find just about everything on sale!

What you need:

  • Old box for a base.
  • Duck Tape (Any color)
  • Two storage containers, one smaller than the other
  • 10 boxes of crayons
  • 12 glue sticks
  • 12 pairs of scissors
  • 24 pencils
  • Selection of markers
  • a couple of packs of pink erasers.
  • Ribbon
  • Crafting putty

It’s really easy to put together, here’s how we did it!

First, we cut the side off of the box to make a base for the cake, and covered it in a fun duck tape:

Use the crafting putty to hold your larger storage container to the base, and do the same to the smaller container to hold it to the lid of the larger one.

Now to cover the “cake” in school supplies!

First, use the boxes of crayons to go around the base. Use double stick tape or crafting putty to hold them down to the base. Fill in the corners with glue sticks, and tie a ribbon around these supplies to hold them in place.

Wrap the next layer with the kid scissors, and a couple of rulers (if you have them). Secure with a rubber band.

We used a cup covered in matching duck tape and secured it to the top container lid with crafting putty. We placed a rubber band around the cup to hold markers next!

My girls sharpened all of the pencils while I put markers all around the cup, secured by the rubber band. We chose Sharpies, Expo, and Mr. Sketch Smelly Markers.

I found some Glitter Star Garland, and wrapped that around the markers to cover the rubber band there. I had some Patriotic flowers from a previous craft project and put those in the pencil cup as a topper, and that’s it!

20140825_165939We took our School Supply Cake in to our Open House/Orientation day to meet the teacher, and she really liked it!

This would also be a really great idea for Teacher Appreciation Day, or a holiday gift as well!

It was really quick and easy to make, and with everything on sale, we spent less than $40 on everything at our local Walmart Store!

What do you think? Would this be something you make for your new teacher?
