How many of you have little ones that adamantly refuse to take their doctor prescribed medicine, because it tastes “gross”??? I know my girls have had issues with many a medication sent home to make them “all better”. Sometimes it’s a battle to get them to take it, and even though they’re little, I wished that just one little pill would take the place of that liquid so it didn’t have to be such a battle. Well, now there’s something that just might make giving your little one medicine a little bit easier, but no, it’s not a pill… It’s flavoring for those yucky liquid medicines.. and we’ve used them many times for our girls!
It’s called FLAVORx.
The inspiration for FLAVORx came out of desperation. The year was 1994. A DC-area pharmacist and his son were at wit’s end to get the son’s epileptic infant daughter to take her medicine. The poor girl couldn’t keep the medicine down and her condition was worsening. After many late nights in the pharmacy, the father and son tandem came up with a new flavor they felt masked the awful taste of her medication. The daughter would be the true test.
With fingers crossed, the son approached his daughter with a syringe full of the custom-flavored medicine while his pharmacist dad looked on. Much to their delight, the young girl not only took that dose without a problem, she never again struggled to take her epilepsy medicine.
Thinking there must be other children who struggle to take medicine, the pharmacist and his son came up with a medication flavoring system that they sold to other local pharmacies. It was such a hit with customers, and created such a stir, that soon enough pharmacies across the nation were knocking on the door.
Since 2006 FLAVORx has been committed to giving customers a choice when it comes to how medicine should taste (there is even an online formulary for recipes) as well as reducing medicine-time stress that is often associated with a bad tasting experience.
FLAVORx products are dye-free, sugar-free, gluten-free as well as casein-free and can be located in all Walmart Pharmacy locations. There are a handful of medications that cannot be flavored due to stability concerns; however the majority of liquid medications including antibiotics and OTC medications can be flavored. So why be sick and have to take horrible tasting medicine? We used this for our girls whenever they had something to take, and it made medicine time so much easier. The flavors aren’t bad.. Yes I tried them… I’m not going to say that it *totally* took the medicine flavor away, but it hid it pretty well, and made it bearable… Hey, the kids didn’t complain… So, it’s good in my book!
