I know, I know.. Fortune cookies were actually, in fact, created in the USA… BUT, they are pretty well known symbols of good luck and you get one every time you go out for Chinese food!
Last year, I showed you a really yummy WonTon Soup recipe. This year, I wanted to do something cute for Chinese New Year, and I saw a lot of fabric or paper fortune cookies… I have been on a crocheting kick lately, and so I wanted to make a crocheted Fortune Cookie, or a few, to have around the house for the Chinese New Year. These are very easy to make, and take just a few minutes each! I got all of my supplies from my local Walmart for less than $10!
Here’s what you’ll need:
Here’s how you make it:
“Fortune tag”
- Start with a slip knot, and ch 7.
- in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc.
- sc in each ch back to the end of the original ch. Tie off.
- Set aside
This fortune cookie is made by crocheting a simple circle, and then sewing it into shape. The pattern is worked in the round, without joining the rounds.
Start by Ch 2 and work in the first ch.
- 6 sc in a circle.
- 2sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
- (2sc in next sc, 1sc in next sc) 6 times. (18 sc)
- (2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 2 sc) 6 times. (24 sc)
- (2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 3 sc) 6 times. (30 sc)
- (2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 4 sc) 6 times. (36 sc)
- (2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 5 sc) 6 times. (42 sc)
It will look like this:
For a larger cookie, keep incrementing, following the pattern as needed.
Once you have reached the desired size, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing, and finish off.
To make the fortune cookie shape, first fold the circle in half and sew along the edge, leaving a small hole for stuffing.
Add a bit of stuffing, place the “fortune” in the hole leaving a little bit sticking out.
Finish sewing the cookie closed, securing the fortune in it.
Pinch the corners of the semi-circle together, making a fortune cookie shape.
Finally, use one or two small stitches along the folded edge to hold the cookie in shape.
That’s it!
You’ll have perfectly deliciously looking crocheted fortune cookies!
You can make these using scraps of various yarns if you want to make them colorful for other holidays, or as treats and gifts!
