I have NEVER claimed to be good at cake decorating, so when I was asked to try out some new Halloween treat ideas with Wilton, I was a little hesitant, but I thought, how hard can it be? Well, you’ve got to give me an A for effort! LOL.
I received my box of goodies from Wilton, full of decorating tools, sprinkles, and icing coloring. I was like a kid in a candy store. I knew that I was in for a challenge. I had forgotten to grab a box of cake mix (yes, my cakes come from a box), so I went looking for a chocolate cupcake recipe online. I found one with some really good reviews, and I had all of the ingredients, so I printed it out to give it a try.
Once everything was baked, the hard part began. I mixed up my buttercream icing, and split some up in a couple of bowls. One for black, and one for orange. The colors turned out great! Here come the icing tips and cones. I tried putting my icing in the plastic cones with the #32 tip on. I guess I must’ve mixed my icing with too much milk because it was not as stiff as it should have been. Instead of really cool textured icing, it just slid right down the cupcake top and kind of melted into itself. Oh well. Time to improvise. I took the spatula and spread a thin layer across my cupcakes. It gave it a sort of orange and black marbled look to it.
Well, After all was said and done, the kids loved the cupcakes. Whether they looked like a professional decorator did them, or mommy did them, didn’t matter to them. They were a great treat, and I have a couple more days until Halloween. I’ll try again over the weekend once I get some more buttercream icing. I think the next treat I’ll try is decorated sugar cookies.
