There’s a new kind of apple coming to Walmart stores nationwide! They’re called the Piñata apple and they’re from the same folks that brought us the delicious Sweetango Apples last year! The Piñata apples are a cross between England’s Cox’s Orange Pippin, Russia’s Duchess of Oldenburg, and the classic American Golden Delicious. The apple’s high acid, high sugar flavor profile and crisp skin make it good for fresh eating, where it’s thin skin makes it ideal for baking, or cooking.
We were sent a box of these apples to try out for ourselves, and I have to admit, I wasn’t as impressed with the Piñata apples, as I was with the Sweetango apples from last year. They were good fresh, but seemed to yield a slight after taste when eaten plain. Our family loves to eat apples with peanut butter, or caramel, and when the apple was dipped in something, we didn’t notice any after taste at all.
The best way, I think, to eat these apples is by baking them into turnovers. We used this recipe here to make ours, substituting the Piñata apples for the Granny Smith apples in the recipe, and they turned out delicious…
Piñata apples will be available in Walmart stores starting in February! For more information about the Piñata apples, you can check out their facebook page, or go directly to their website!
