Recipe: Home made Wonton Soup

Need an excuse to celebrate New Year’s all over again?? The Chinese New Year is coming up on January 31st! I’m really excited to share this really yummy recipe that you can make in honor of the Chinese New Year. This yummy twist on the traditional Wonton Soup is easy, inexpensive, and delicious! It’s already been taste tested by my family and got 5 stars from everyone!

We got most of our supplies at our local Walmart store for under $15. Many of the items we already had at home.

I also put this recipe into my Weight Watchers Recipe Builder and figured out that this soup is only 6 Points Plus per serving! Low points, and yummy! You can’t go wrong! Ok.. On to the recipe!

Here’s what you need:

  • 6 cups chicken broth (home made, or canned)
  • Fresh Ginger (3 thin slices & 1 Tbsp minced)
  • 1 bunch Bok Choy (Sliced into medium sized pieces)
  • 1 package Lean Ground Turkey (approx 1lb)
  • 1/2 medium Onion, minced
  • 1-5 cloves garlic, minced (depending on preference)
  • 1.5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 tsp Rice Vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp Sesame Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/8 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Corn Starch
  • 1 package Wonton Wrappers

Here’s how you make it:

  1. BoilI made my own chicken stock by boiling the remains of the previous night’s oven roasted chicken. You can use home made, or canned, but try to stick with low sodium.
  2. Add Ginger slices to the broth, and set to simmer.
  3. In a bowl, combine the ground turkey, onion, garlic, and minced ginger. Add the Soy Sauce, Rice Vinegar, Sesame Oil, Salt, Black Pepper, and Corn Starch. Mix well.

Make the Wontons:

  1. WaterPrepPlace a Wonton Wrapper on your work area. I used  a cutting board. Dip your finger in water and  moisten all 4 edges of the wrapper.
  2. FillPlace about a 1/2 tsp of meat mixture on the wrapper, and fold the wrapper so the edges meet up. Fold
  3. Press gently to seal up the moistened edges.
  4. Use your finger to make an indentation in the middle of the filled wonton.
  5. Add a drop of water, with your finger, to the bottom corner of the wonton, and fold at the indentation so the corners meet. WontonMade
  6. Pinch them together to secure them.

Cooking the soup:

  1. Start up the chicken broth again! Bring it to a boil.
  2. Use a slotted spoon to gently add the wontons to the broth, keeping it at a low boil.
  3. Cook the wontons until they are no longer pink inside. (You’ll have to take one and cut it open to check it). It takes at least 7 minutes. CookWonton
  4. Turn the heat back up to high and add the bok choy. Let it simmer for about 3 minutes. Cooked
  5. Serve approximately 5-6 wontons in each bowl, and fill with the broth. Home Made Wonton Soup
